Bringing Hope and Kindness to Families Afflicted with Poverty
We launched our food program in Canada in 2016 with the “Hope for Kids Canada” initiative, initially providing food hampers and gift cards to those in need. As demand grew, this program evolved into what is now known as the “Community Upliftment: Food Security and Beyond” food bank. You can read more below and apply for support below!

Community Upliftment: Food Security and Beyond
Our “Food Security and Beyond” project reflects our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, emphasizing that access to culturally appropriate food is a fundamental human right. Through our Cultural Food Bank, we provide more than just food; we offer a taste of home, ensuring that everyone can access familiar and meaningful ingredients that reflect their cultural heritage. This initiative fosters a sense of belonging, where diverse flavors and backgrounds come together to create a harmonious and inclusive community. Join us in our journey to nourish both body and soul, embracing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our community.
Food Insecurity in Black Communities: Black households in Canada experience food insecurity at higher rates than other groups. Nationally, nearly 30% of Black households report some level of food insecurity, which is over twice the rate of white households. This can be attributed to income inequality, systemic barriers, and limited access to culturally appropriate food resources.
Statistics for Calgary: In Calgary, food insecurity among Black and immigrant communities has been a growing concern, especially as food costs rise. Calgary’s population of African descent has increased, yet they face challenges in accessing foods that align with their cultural diets. Initiatives like culturally specific food banks are important in reducing food insecurity and improving well-being.
Community Health and Inclusion: Access to culturally appropriate food not only aids in food security but also enhances mental and social well-being by promoting cultural identity and community cohesion. Projects like “Food Security and Beyond” help bridge the gap for African descendant communities by addressing these holistic needs. These statistics underscore the importance of culturally inclusive food programs to support a diverse community in Canada and Calgary.
