The Wings of Hope for Africa Foundation responds to communities and individuals in distress. This year, we are working to expand our emergency relief capacity. This is a response to the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters in East Africa. By providing essential supplies such as food, hygiene products, clothing, anti-malaria mosquito nets, mattresses, and funds for healthcare, the Wings of Hope for Africa team adapts to the specific needs of communities in distress. Mahama Refugee Camp Donation, 2019
On October 9th, 2019, we visited the Mahama Refugee camp in Rwanda and we donated 400 shoes for unaccompanied children, 180 outfits for elderly women, 180 pairs of underwear for women and 180 flannels for newborns. The families were very happy to receive these donations and send their high appreciation to our donors.
Buterere Flood Response, 2018
Beans and blankets can go a long way to helping a family in Burundi. We brought renewed hope to 70 families in Buterere, Burundi. Your generosity provided concrete action to people who have lost everything after severe flooding struck their homes. Each family received a mattress, blanket, a pack of 12 bars of soap plus 30 kg each of beans and rice.
Bubanza Emergency Relief, 2017
Severe droughts, coupled with insect pests, are causing fields to be parched in Bubanza province located in northwestern Burundi. As of late April, millions of Burundians continue to suffer from hunger and this long famine continues to take people’s lives. On Easter Weekend, April 15th, Wings of Hope for Africa together with Shemeza Music Ministries and other Organizations instilled a ray of hope to families in the community of Kagwema. Basic goods were donated, including food, rice, beans, flour and potatoes, to address the communities needs.
Emergency Medical Support, 2017
Venant Kabahoze, from Buterere, was suffering from a broken leg and needed surgery to insert pins, but couldn’t afford to pay for the procedure. We stepped in and paid for his medical bills. Thank you to our sponsors who made this possible.
Carama Refugee Camp Donation, 2016
Just before the holidays, we delivered donations of food, clothing, and supplies to refugees at Carama Camp, near Bujumbura, Burundi. This site hosts 242 families and about 218 children under 10 years old. Most from them fled their homes in the Burundian unrest. Thank you for your support.
Mahama Refugee Camp Donation, 2016
The Wings of Hope team bought supplies in Rwanda’s capital of Kigali, then embarked on a 4 hour journey to the camp, where they handed off the donations to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The team of 3 bought and delivered 100 mattresses, 1,200 pairs of undergarments, 118 shoes for women and children, as well as 60 shorts and 60 T-shirts, 40 pants and 40 long sleeved shirts for children. The supplies were purchased with the $8,496 we raised during a three-and-a-half month campaign earlier in 2016.
Gatagara House Donation, 2016
In July 2016, we delivered supplies to Gatagara House, in Kiyovu, Nyarugenge, Rwanda. This shelter houses more than 30 Burundian refugees – elderly, youth, and young children who cannot stay at the refugee camps due to sickness, trauma, mental illness, or disabilities.
Buterere Flood Response, 2014
On February 9, 2014, flooding occurred in the north of Bujumbura with 60 dead, 81 wounded, and 400 houses destroyed. The city of Buterere, where our organization and fundraising efforts mainly occur was also affected. On March 8th, W.H.A sponsored “THE SOUND OF HOPE” event. Donations of food, clothing, kitchen material, and shoes were given to families affected by the flood.
